In January the STAR – NZ YOUTH SALSA TEAM attended the 2009 Sydney Salsa Congress in Australia. While there star kids got to meet some of the amazing International and Australian Salsa Stars, such as World Salsa Champions Oliver & Luda, Jamie Jesus and Lil Liz, Victor & Brujur from Boston, Super Mario, Fernando & Becky Lee – Salsa Suave, Alex Lee & Kim, David Paris & Zoe, Zouk Masters Kadu & Larissa and many more.
It was amazing weekend of high energy, workshops, performances and parties. All the Star Students improved their social dance skills at the parties where the dance floor was the size of a basketball court. During the congress week-end there were many performances. Ones that stood out were the West Coast Swing Couple, Alex Lee & Kim Versus David Paris & Zoe – which was a fun-filled entertaining battle of the “Lifts” with lots of humor – (Mr Stayz’s highlight).
On Stage – The NZ Salsa Kids were amazing, both Friday & Saturday Night performances were fantastic. Friday Night performance saw TROY KENNY team front-man lead his team in a artistic choreography of Hector Lavoe’s powerful song “Aguanile”. This team was captained by Ms Dayna.

Saturday Night saw SAM MORISON team front-man, carve up the stage as Michael Jackson, in an entertaining crowd pleasing salsa-modern dance mix of Smooth Criminal. This team was captained by Ms Jasmine. Saturday Night’s performance received the biggest standing ovation and shout-out that I have ever seen in my 5 years of attending the Sydney Salsa Congress. It wasn’t the level of Salsa, as our salsa level has always been basic, it wasn’t the fact that they were cute kids. It was their pure energy, and the way they went out and performed. They put on a show, and they let the crowd know that this show was for them. The crowd felt that, and they replied accordingly.
It was a really special moment for all the kids, both Friday & Saturday Team, and also for the teams that have represented us so well before them, all the way to the original NZ Salsa Kids from Wanganui, lead by Ms P-lo back in 2005.
DREAM IT - DANCE IT - DO IT!
